The spokesperson told The Verge the device will ship to the US, United Kingdom, and Australia in early 2018. Apple's HomePod was previously slated to be released this December.

Per a report from CNBC, Apple announced on Friday it will delay the release of the HomePod, a smart speaker set to directly compete with the Amazon Echo, until early 2018.

Will you wait for HomePod to arrive? The speaker, which can make music suggestions and adjust home temperatures, takes aim at Amazon.com Inc's (AMZN.O) Alexa feature and Echo devices. Google and Apple, two companies that lead the mobile technological front, both have plans to bring their most powerful smart speakers to the market this holiday season; however, it seems Apple's metaphorical pie needs a little more time in the oven.

In a statement, Apple suggested production issues are to blame. Where Apple does fall short is providing a smart experience with Siri. This is speculation, of course - unless Apple provides more information, we may never know the reason behind the delay. The Apple HomePod uses Siri as its virtual assistant, and will stream music, report the latest news, sports scores, weather, flight information and more.

HomePod is created to work with an Apple Music subscription and iPhone 5s and above running iOS 11. However, missing out on holiday gift purchases could mean some people opt for speakers from other companies, locking them more tightly into rival digital ecosystems.
