Sheriff Johnston said that a number of students have been airlifted out and that the uninjured students are now safe.

Johnston said the child has been transported to the hospital, along with another child who was shot while riding in a truck.

Two children were among the wounded, it was confirmed.

The deputy said officers were called to at least five crime scenes.

He declined to release the name of the gunman but said he was "aware" of a domestic violence incident that neighbours reported.

A neighbor of the shooter spoke with the media and said that the suspect was acting "crazy", and that the suspect threatened him and his roommate before stealing his truck. "That evolved to multiple victims and multiple shots at the school, at the elementary school".

There were a total of 10 people injured, and Tehama County Superintendent of Schools Rich DuVarney said no students or staff at the school were among the fatalities.

A parent, Coy Ferreira, said he was dropping off his daughter when he heard gunshots.

"I have the right to bear arms, and I will protect my son if i have to", she said.

Johnston later said authorities had recovered a semiautomatic rifle and two handguns believed to be used by the shooter.

According to the CBS affiliate KHSL-TV, the shooting took place in the community of Rancho Tehama, about 15 miles southwest of Red Bluff, around 8:00 a.m.

Students at Rancho Tehama Elementary are being evacuated to the Rancho Tehama Recreation Hall.

No one answered the phone at the elementary school, and an official speaking for Rich DuVarney, Tehama County superintendent of schools, said he was trying to find out what was happening.

A representative for the Tehama County Sheriff's Office could not immediately be reached for comment. Says his neighbor was the gunman.
