At least 16 people died and others were feared drowned after a tourist boat packed with 35-40 passengers capsized into river Krishna at the Pavithra Sangamam ghat near Vijayawada on Sunday evening. Fifteen people were rescued by local fishermen.

According to Vijayawada police, the motor boat with a three-man crew was ferrying 38 passengers from Bhavani Island to Pavitra Sangamam near Ibrahimpatnam on the outskirts of Vijayawada for a religious ceremony on Karthika Masam.

Such accidents are common in India where many ferries are poorly built and often overcrowded, and there is little regard for safety regulations such as providing life jackets.

"So far, 16 bodies have been recovered from river".
