Three-Carrier Strike Force Exercise to Commence in Western Pacific

The deployment of the three nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in the region comes amid a visit by U.S. President Donald Trump to Asia.

The last time such drills were held was during the Valiant Shield exercises in 2006 and 2007, which took place off the coast of the US territory of Guam, which hosts two USA military bases, and aimed to develop the ability for the three strike groups to quickly work together should it become necessary.

"A touch-and-go situation is prevailing in the peninsula due to the US and south Korean puppet forces' military provocations", the official Rodong Sinmun wrote.

From the end of May to the beginning of June, the US Navy sent two aircraft carriers - the USS Ronald Reagan and the USS Carl Vinson - to the waters around the Korean Peninsula to conduct joint exercises.

An unnamed official with the South Korean military was quoted as saying three US aircraft carriers will stage joint drills with the South Korean military from Saturday to Tuesday in the Korea theater of operations (KTO) off the country's east coast.

The three flattops are the USS Ronald Reagan, Nimitz and Theodore Roosevelt. These opportunities typically come about when the strikes groups deployed to the 7th Fleet area of operations from the West Coast of the U.S. are coupled with the forward deployed carrier strike group from Japan, said the report on the official website of the Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet.

The exercise will involve three of the Navy's 11 carriers, and concentrate more aircraft carriers the combined fleets of China and Russian Federation.

During the drill, the first of its kind in a decade, the warships will carry out air strike and defense simulations, maritime surveillance, sea supply, coordinated fenced maneuvers and other training, added the Navy. The Fleet is just as committed to maintaining those security commitments for the next 70 years.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency described the exercises as an "unprecedented show of force" off the peninsula.

"The U.S. efforts to expand its military influence in Asia-Pacific and the movement of big neighboring powers to contain it escalate the military tension and increase arms race in the region with each passing day", it said.
