According to a statement by U.S. seventh Fleet, the USS Ronald Reagan, USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt strike groups will conduct coordinated operations in worldwide waters "to demonstrate the U.S. Navy's unique capability to operate multiple carrier strike groups as a coordinated strike force effort".

The last time such drills were held was during the Valiant Shield exercises in 2006 and 2007, which took place off the coast of the US territory of Guam, which hosts two USA military bases, and aimed to develop the ability for the three strike groups to quickly work together should it become necessary.

Shin Won-sik, former head of the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff operational headquarters, said that the U.S. Navy's coordinated operations would "give a taste" of Washington's military options on North Korea, which has often threatened to hit the U.S. mainland with long-range missiles. "This exercise in the Western Pacific is a strong testament to the U.S. Pacific Fleet's unique ability and ironclad commitment to the continued security and stability of the region". Speaking in Tokyo on Monday, Trump renewed his warning that the "era of strategic patience" with North Korea was over.

The CIA has said North Korea could be only months away from developing the ability to hit the United States with nuclear weapons, a scenario Trump has vowed to prevent.

Addressing the North Korea crisis, the US President tweeted: "NoKo has interpreted America's past restraint as weakness".

"While in a war against China, US carriers might be vulnerable, they wouldn't be in any conflict against North Korea.and three US carriers can deliver a tremendous amount of airpower".
