His communications director released a statement, saying the senator was "blind-sided" by his attacker. The Daily Caller reports that Boucher appears to be a registered Democrat.

Police arrested 59-year-old Rene Boucher in connection with the attack.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is recovering after being assaulted at his Kentucky home on Friday, joining a growing list of lawmakers who have been injured or threatened with violence this year. Due to Boucher's attack, the Republican senator has suffered "minor injury".
