Doing business in India easier now: Modi

Union minister Smriti Zubin Irani said on Thursday that the mega global food festival was in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of "transforming" food economy and doubling farmers' income.

The three-day World Food India event was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Altogether 6 nos. of Farmers Producers Company, namely, Ampri Orange Agro Producer Company, Brahmaputra Valley Honey Agro Producer Company, Janoki Agro Producer Company, Amlighat Banana Agro Producer Company, Merapani Agro Producer Company & Jirson Agro Producer Company, promoted by the Department of Horticulture and Food Processing, Assam participated in the World Food India, 2017.

In a section titled "Projects Ready for Procurement in FY 2016-17" in its "Make in India Investment Book", which had been circulated in Indian Missions overseas, the Centre had mentioned that work on the project started in 2015 with the anticipated project completion time line of 2018-19.

India, he said, is one of fastest growing economies in the world and implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from July 1 has eliminated multiplicity of taxes.

The Prime Minister said there are opportunities in post-harvest management, like primary processing and storage, cold chain and refrigerated transportation. However, more investment is required in contract farming, raw material sourcing and creating agri-linkages.

She said there was a need to wage war on food waste "to ensure adequate food for all" and to avoid a food crisis as the world's population was set to increase by 25 per cent and the demand for food by 50 per cent by 2050.

Over 800 kgs of khichdi will be prepared live on 4 November at the festival in a bid to create a world record and popularise the dish globally.
