Reacting to the development, a civil society organisation, the Civil Society Network Against Corruption, condemned Okorocha for not only directing an Imo monarch to confer a traditional title on Zuma but also unveiling a "giant" statue of the South African leader "in a conspicuous place in Owerri".

"It is the same South Africa where many Nigerians majorly of the eastern extraction are being killed on weekly bases".

Following diplomatic trips to Zambia, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, President Zuma was thanked for his work by having a statue erected in his honour on a street named after him by the State Governor of the Imo State. The South African president is also under fire for allegations of corruption and abuse of power in his ruling African National Congress (ANC). Besides the corruption charges, South Africa's top court ruled in 2016 that Zuma had failed to uphold the constitution by using state funds to build a swimming pool and a cattle ranch-among other things-at his Nkandla home.

The honor to the former South African president was done in appreciation of his selfless service to mankind.

"Though we recognize the federal government's position on not hosting President Zuma in Abuja as his visit would have questioned the anti-corruption policy of President Buhari", said Mr. Suraj.

The group, in a statement by its Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, noted that it was wrong of Okorocha to honour Zuma who had been indicted for corruption in South Africa in that manner.

He spoke in Owerri, the Imo State capital, while signing a memorandum of understanding between his foundation, The Jacobs G. Zuma Foundation, and The Rochas Foundation College System. "It's not the best PR exercise, if you ask me", said Adetunuji Omotolo, a representative of the group.
