Raiders quarterback out 2-6 weeks

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered the same injury on a hit from a defensive player, also only missing one game.

On Sunday in Denver, Manuel entered in relief of Carr after the latter left the contest.

Oakland Raiders quarterback EJ Manuel (3) throws a pass against the Los Angeles Rams in the third quarter at Oakland Coliseum. Those five opponents are now a combined 9-9 (Chiefs play Monday night).

After two strong games to start the season, Carr struggled badly against the Washington Redskins last Sunday night, and wasn't playing his best game against Denver prior to a 64-yard touchdown on broken coverage.

As we wrote following the game yesterday, we hate seeing players get injured, and this couldn't have happened to a classier player in Carr, who signed a massive extension this offseason.

Biggest worry while Carr is out: Oakland was terrible when Carr went down with a broken leg in Week 16. The defense may have to carry Oakland because it won't be almost as explosive on offense without Carr.

Like so many National Football League teams, the Raiders clearly entered this season with the notion that the backup quarterback wouldn't have to play.

As such, Manuel will be under center in a really important Week 5 game against Baltimore this upcoming Sunday at the Coliseum. He looked decent at times as Carr's replacement in Denver on Sunday. "I got that information about 10 minutes ago".

Bottom line: The NFL Network reported there is hope Carr is back after one week. The Raiders must find a way to function better this year without Carr than they did without him.

The fact that second-year quarterback Connor Cook lost out on the top backup job shouldn't be a feather in Manuel's cap - it should be a demerit against Cook. Carr was sidelined previous year after suffering a fractured tibula in Week 16, and Matt McGloin and Connor Cook weren't able to do enough to prevent an immediate playoff exit with a 27-14 loss to the Texans.
