Twitter to double character limit to 280

After Twitter announced their test project of doubling up their tweet character limit from 140 to 280, the microblogging site has been overflowing with reactions.

"Among the considerations is "newsworthiness" and whether a Tweet is of public interest", the company wrote.

In the past week, debate has swirled over whether Trump's tweeting about North Korea - including a comment where he said its leader "won't be around much longer" violated Twitter's terms of service banning threats of violence.

Meanwhile, Twitter users have found ways to cope with the 140-character limit by stringing tweets together in a series.

Twitter is actively trying to boost its user base, which has not grown significantly for the past three years. To the majority of users, increasing the character limit would compromise what Twitter has been known for all these years which is their brevity.

So far, not all Twitter-users are thrilled about the change. They did not elaborate on how many people would participate in the testing or what the criteria would be for selecting them. A lot of users would normally post multiple tweets that express one train of thought but that will soon be over. "Today we had everyone in the company join an @TwitterSafety all hands". This is the first time since the launch of the micro-blogging platform, the tweet length has been increased. What matters most is that this works for our community - we will be collecting data and gathering feedback along the way. This can detract from Twitter's core identity as a venue for succinct posts. But we can expect the rollout to be cross-platform, including expanded tweet support on Android and iOS apps.

On Sept. 16, the SDF said a Russian airstrike wounded six of its fighters, but Moscow denied carrying out the attack. The indirect surface-to-surface fire, he said, was believed to have come from either Syrian or Russian forces.

But maybe a Twitter with longer tweets won't be so bad.

As with the new Tweet limit, there's no word on when the feature will be going official. The company raised concerns of a dwindling popularity as a result of its tough stance on the number of characters a tweet should have.

But the 140-character cutoff was arbitrary as a holdover from the early days when tweets were sent as SMS texts with a total limit of 160 characters.

Twitter's new idea might just be the answer to your wishes.

Have you tried some of these methods to enable Twitter's 280 characters limit?
