Lions find themselves in unusual territory after win over Giants

Eli Manning was sacked five times Monday. Previous year it was more the offense struggling. It doesn't get any easier for the Giants, either, not with road games against Philadelphia and Tampa Bay in the next two weeks. Tripling their season-opening total of three did little to endanger the visiting Lions - far from an offensive juggernaut - on a muggy New Jersey night. "And with that being said, that's what I'm going to do". Stafford had a quiet night but he played better than Eli. Time has shown that this is no longer the case.

With an 0-2 start at his back, with a stagnant offense in his hands, with a second straight week of so many questions and so few answers, that was the best the second-year Giants' head coach could do to questions about potential changes in personnel or the possibility of giving up the play-calling duties, saying to both, "We'll consider everything". Manning had another mediocre night. Detroit needs someone who can run between the tackles and convert those short yardage plays because Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick simply cannot get it done.

Don't get me wrong, I personally love Ben McAdoo as the Giants head coach. "Initially, we were focusing on the other side. He hasn't played football in a while".

- Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) September 19, 2017I wouldn't trust Ereck Flowers to hold a door open for me at this point. Manning is completing a lot of passes - 72.9% - but the majority of them are dump-offs. They got good news before the game when Odell Beckham Jr. got the green light to play in the game. "I got my 20-30 plays, or whatever it was, and just try to make the majority".

A 38-yard pass from Manning to the backup tight end Jerell Adams gave the Giants the ball at the Detroit 1-yard line near the midpoint of the third quarter. Manning isn't the problem, and a more measured option may be to use the draft to get Manning some premium-quality help on the offensive line.

Midway through the third quarter, with the Giants down 10 to the Lions, New York opted to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 2.

Last season, quarterback Matthew Stafford saved them from another lost year, recording a league-record eight fourth-quarter comebacks to fashion a 9-7 season for a team that trailed in the fourth quarter 15 times in 16 games. "So, just not executing enough on third downs in the green zone, some critical moments".

Lions pass rusher Ezekiel Ansah ran through Flowers like he was a turnstile en route to three sacks.

Detroit would return the ensuing punt for a score to salt the game away.

"I mean we can't pull points out of a hat", McAdoo said. "I got to find ways to move the offense and move the ball". We've got to do better. We had a turnover in the first half, then we come back and turn the ball right back over.

Caldwell said he has already started looking at Atlanta because this will be a short week.

The only good news is they couldn't possibly lose more games than the Jets in 2017.
