The attacker was overpowered by the soldier and arrested. The man was swiftly brought under control by the soldier. No data is provided on the status of the French soldier.

The soldier involved was with the Sentinelle force assigned to protect prominent sites after deadly Islamic extremist attacks in recent years.

That attack came just four days after Sentinelle soldiers arrested an 18-year-old with a history of psychological problems at the Eiffel Tower, after he had allegedly brandished a knife and shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest).

Operation Sentinel has been in operation since 2015 following the January 2015 terror attacks at the Charlie Hebdo office and Jewish Hypercache supermarket. Last month a man rammed his auto into a group of soldiers near Paris, injuring six of them.
