After when rivals fight a couple of times, they squash their beef and move on, but it doesn't sound like that's going to happen with Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko. LIVE hotel in Los Angeles, Calif., on Thursday, June 29, 2017. "I respect the decision of the judges, but I think it was my fight", Shevchenko said.

But even without the significance of a historic night after Demetrious Johnson was cruelly denied his shot at breaking the consecutive successful title defence record following Ray Borg's illness last week, the card still had plenty of pop.

"The Lioness" used a more energy conserving, yet technical, approach to earn a very close, hard to judge, split-decision victory over Valentina Shevchenko on Saturday night in the main event of UFC 215.

"It was tough because I buy my new house, my new auto, all those things you work so hard to get", Nunes said. Elsewhere on the main card, we saw former UFC flyweight contender Henry Cejudo club Wilson Reis to a first-round win, while Ilir Latifi slowed the rise of Tyson Pedro with a decision, and knockout artist Jeremy Stephens spoiled the featherweight debut of Gilbert Melendez with a unanimous nod. "I'm here for a reason", she said. "I'm still very congested but I had to push this fight".

That leaves Nunes and Shevchenko in the main event, a similar position for them at UFC 213 until Nunes withdrew from the bout hours before it.

"I don't agree with the decision at all", Shevchenko said. I decided with my coach that at the end of the round, take her down.

If people blame me for this, no problem, but it was a decision taken for the season. Garcia said, " I think for Jurgen this has to be the season ".

Shevchenko has gotten over the disappointment and is ready for the rematch. "I think she won the fourth". With under two minutes left, Shevchenko tried to turn a Nunes takedown into a throw, but Nunes ended up on her back on the mat.

Asked at the postfight news conference if she would appeal the decision, Shevchenko thought for a moment and said, "If I can, I will". "It will be the same fight, the same opponent, and it will be the same preparation". "I want to fight Valentina".

Instead, Nunes played a risky at-range striking game, which nearly cost her the championship anyway, just in a much less exciting way.

While she's obviously upset about the result, Shevchenko promises she's more than willing to admit defeat when it's clear that she's lost a fight. (People are talking) like I was scared or something like that.

Henry Cejudo will face Wilson Reis, the last challenger for Johnson's belt, in the flyweight division on the main card.

Donald Cerrone, who he decimated in a lightweight title fight, lies ahead of him in the rankings while the victor of Stephen Thompson/Jorge Masvidal at UFC 217 is an enticing prospect also. Four preliminary fights will air on Fox Sports 1 at 5.
