"While we know that thousands of pets and the people who care about them have been dealt a awful blow by Hurricane Harvey, cattle are also suffering, and substantially so", Dr Dickie Vest, senior medical director of the HSUS' Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, America's biggest large animal sanctuary, said. HAWS partnered with the Humane Society of the United States on the ground, and Wings of Rescue in the air to get the dogs to Wisconsin.

More than 150 animals from southeast Texas are now safe in the Midstate following Hurricane Harvey's devastation.

"We work with the Mutt Nation Foundation, and they requested our assistance for rescues of the shelters in those areas", said Evan Fade, executive director of the Tulsa Humane Society.

HAWS officials said they've received an overwhelming number of applicants for foster caregivers.

They are also urging people not to abandon their pets at this time.

Patrice Andrews, who is general manager of Animal Planet, said Thursday that the network hopes to promote the need for donations to organizations that worked on the rescue effort. As the rescue progresses, HAWS officials may re-open that list, but they've stopped taking names now.

For those who abandon their animals, such as chaining up their dog in a backyard without food or water, they will be issued two citations - animal cruelty and abandonment.
