The EOHU is confirming the summer's second human case of West Nile virus in the region.

Local news outlets reported on Monday new cases in Clarke, Hinds, Lauderdale, Monroe and Yazoo counties now bring Mississippi's total to 41 this year.

However, the health unit confirms the virus was found in mosquitoes located within a trap in Bradford West Gwillimbury.

"Historically, reports of people becoming ill from West Nile virus peak in August and September", said Sarah Mattes of PHMDC. If you have symptoms that persist between two and 15 days after a mosquito bite, seek medical attention.

To protect yourself from West Nile virus, officials recommend wearing light-coloured trousers and a long-sleeved shirt when outside.

A smaller proportion may develop neurological symptoms such as limb paralysis, tremors, and altered mental status. Some individuals may die from the infection.

There have been 24 reported human cases of West Nile Virus that were either confirmed or probable, according to Public Health Ontario's website.
