Cardiology study links higher coffee intake with lower risk of early death

The findings - as concluded by the Hospital de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain - suggest that those who drink at least four cups of coffee per day had a 64% lower risk of death than those who did not consume, or hardly consumed, coffee, USA Today writes. In one study, participants who drank anywhere from one to six cups a week were reported to live longer, while a separate study showed that men and women who drank the most coffee also lived the longest.

Coffee contains a number of compounds including caffeine, diterpenes and antioxidants, and scientists believe some of these have a protective impact on the body.

Researchers found that drinking more coffee could significantly lower a person's risk of mortality.

Researchers took into consideration the participants' sex, age and adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and collected information about their food intake, lifestyle, health conditions and family history.

In the past, one study surveyed more than 520,000 people in 10 European countries, making it the largest study to date on coffee and mortality.

The research was conducted within the framework of the Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra (SUN) Project, a long-term prospective cohort study in more than 22,500 Spanish university graduates which started in 1999. She said: "I would advise drinking plenty of coffee". A new study says having an extra cup isn't just a good idea, but may be healthy for you too.

The research study, authored by Dr. Adela Navarro, a cardiologist at Hospital de Navarra in Spain, was presented at the ESC's conference on August 27.

The study involved those aged between 25 and 60, with a median starting age of 37.

The antioxidants in coffee provide the life extending effect, according to Dr. Adela Navarro. Previous studies found that coffee improves liver functionality.

Professor Metin Avkiran, of the British Heart Foundation, said: 'The best way to minimise your risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death is to concentrate on an overall healthy lifestyle - eat a balanced diet, stay active and don't smoke - rather than lining up the lattes'.
