Amazon's Takeover Of Whole Foods Complete; Mixed Reaction From Shoppers

"Starting Monday, Whole Foods Market will offer lower prices on a selection of best-selling staples across its stores, with much more to come", a press release issued by Amazon on August 24 stated.

After completing its $13.7 billion purchase of Whole Foods on Monday, Amazon slashed the prices of dozens of items at all 460 of its new grocery stores.

Amazon is just using Whole Foods for data mining, alleged NPR, saying that many Amazon Prime customers shop at Whole Foods.

Whole Foods Markets healthy and high-quality private label products—including 365 Everyday Value, Whole Foods Market, Whole Paws and Whole Catch—will be available through Amazon.com, AmazonFresh, Prime Pantry and Prime Now. Organic Fuji apples went from $3.49 to $1.99 per pound.

Traditionally, Whole Foods (nicknamed "Whole Paycheck" by some) has been known for their high prices and boutique selections.

Whole Foods - with Charlotte-area stores in SouthPark, Huntersville, Waverly and one under construction in uptown - had said it planned to lower prices starting Monday, but hasn't said how many items saw their prices drop. That's admittedly a pretty big caveat and, perhaps, a sign that Amazon may be clearing out old inventory in advance of an Echo refresh, along with celebrating the acquisition.

Though Amazon has previously used aggressive price cuts to weed out competitors and dominate markets in other retail sectors, analysts said they didn't expect that to play out exactly the same way in the grocery business.

Also, in true Amazon fashion, the company is discounting select groceries at stores across the country.

The tech giant's $US13.7 billion purchase of Whole Foods has sent shock waves through the already changing $US800 billion supermarket industry.

The Post visited a local Whole Foods store on Friday, and again on Monday morning, to compare prices.

Founded in 1978, Whole Foods Market is the first national "Certified Organic" grocer, bringing in approximately $16 billion in sales previous year.

Walmart, the largest retailer in the world, has invested billions in lowering its prices of all its products over the a year ago or more, and revamped its produce sections at USA locations, improving the sight lines, adding additional fresh fruits and creating its own sweeter cantaloupe.

Discounts were comparable at other Whole Foods stores in San Francisco and Seattle. Whole Foods, which started in Austin, Texas in 1980, operates 468 stores in North America and the United Kingdom.

The list is heavy on organic produce and proteins, Bishop noted, as if to underscore to the uninitiated what Whole Foods is all about - and to show where there's profit margin-cutting wiggle room.
