The Ohio shooting took place just before 8 a.m. and left Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. wounded. The sheriff said that years earlier, he had urged Bruzzese to carry a weapon with him for protection due to all of the "nutcases" around the country.

He died at the scene after the judge and a nearby probation officer returned fire.

The judge was able to talk to others after he was shot, reports said. They are waiting to release his identity until his next of kin is notified.

However, Hanlin said authorities still did not know what might have motivated Monday's shooting.

The elder Richmond has a criminal record and is now involved in a lawsuit, she added.

Of note, at the time of the shooting, Bruzzese was exiting in an alleyway by the courthouse.

During remarks to reporters Monday afternoon, Abdalla described Bruzzese as an avid hunter and sportsman.

World Rugby CEO Brett Gosper, cricket star Brendon McCullum and WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker also paid their respects. A bronze statue of the player, who received a knighthood in 2009, was unveiled earlier this year in his hometown of Te Kuiti .

An Ohio judge shot "ambush-style" Monday morning outside the courthouse in Steubenville was seriously wounded and the suspect was killed.

The other man who was seen on video in the Richmond's auto is not being treated as a suspect at this time.

He said the shooter was hit three times and his body remains at the scene. Richmond according to the passenger said that he had to appear in court.

The shooting has led to commentators on the web speculating Judge Bruzzese was likely acutely aware of the dangers of his judicial role and had made a habit of arming himself.

A visiting judge from Hamilton County, where Cincinnati is located, handled the vast majority of the rape case.

"Clearly looking at the one video, you see the attacker coming up toward him", Mavromatis said.

The courthouse is closed this morning while the investigation by local law enforcement officers continues.
