KRP has requested that he be detained on suspicion of two counts of murder committed with terrorist intent and eight counts of attempted murder committed with terrorist intent.

Police shot him in the leg and he is in hospital, but he is expected to appear in court via a video link on Tuesday.

The Finnish Security Intelligence Service (SUPO) had received a warning of possible violent assault before the stabbings occurred in the southwest port city of Turku on Friday, Finnish national broadcaster Yle reported Monday. The suspect temporarily lived in Germany before heading to Finland, where he was denied asylum.

The attack happened in the Puutori/Market Square area of Turku just after 4pm local time, with police receiving reports of a man attacking passers-by with a knife.

Commenting on the attack, German politician and European Union commissioner Gunther Oettinger said that while it happened in Finland, it targeted the whole of Europe.

Police believe the attacker deliberately targeted women - six of the injured were also female.

"One of those injured in the attack, Hassan Zubier €" a British paramedic visiting Turku who came to the aid of a woman who later died €" attended the ceremony in a wheelchair, arriving directly from the hospital.

The main suspect, who had lived in Turku's immigration centre after arriving in Finland a year ago, appeared to have targeted women, police said on Saturday.

All of the victims were women, including the dead, except for two men who tried to fend off the attacker.

Prior to the minute of silence, police re-enacted the crime at the market square as part of their investigation.

Friday's stabbing is being investigated as the country's first terror attack.
