He is due to be retried beginning on November 6 on charges of sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, a former administrator at his alma mater Temple University, at his Philadelphia-area home in 2004.

On Monday, the disgraced comedian announced that he hired Thomas Mesereau, who represented Michael Jackson when he faced charges of molestation.

Silver, a partner of the Philadelphia law firm of Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis, is the only local defense lawyer on Cosby's new team.

The 67-year-old Mesereau is known for getting an acquittal for Jackson in June 2005 after a four-month trial on child molestation charges.

Mesereau has also represented actor Robert Blake, boxer Mike Tyson, and rap kingpin Marion "Suge" Knight.

Despite admitting in depositions more than a decade ago to giving Constand Benadryl pills on the night of the alleged assault in his Philadelphia-area mansion almost 13-years ago Cosby always has insisted that the encounter with the ex-Temple University employee was consensual.

Around 60 women have publicly accused the Emmy-winning actor of being a serial sexual predator, but the trial was the only criminal case brought against Cosby as most of the alleged abuse happened too long ago to prosecute.

Prosecutors quickly pushed for a retrial, and Cosby's lawyers Brian McMonagle and Angela Agrusa asked O'Neill for permission to withdraw. The pair helped Cosby secure a hung jury on trial for sexual assault in June.

After a week of testimony and 52 hours of deliberations, the jury told the judge they could not reach a unanimous verdict on any of the three charges.

On his bio page, Mesereau notes how he was lead trial counsel for a prominent plastic surgeon in Los Angeles.
