A crying infant was discovered abandoned in the bushes of an apartment complex in Harris County Thursday morning.

Investigators said a resident at the complex, who was on his way to work, heard a baby crying, looked in a flower bed and found the newborn covered in ants and other debris. Peterson took the baby to his apartment and asked his wife to call the police, while he cleaned up the baby. "You see her footprints on the ground".

Eventually, the woman confessed that she had given birth to a baby about an hour earlier, Click2Houston reports. She wasn't too hard to track down.

"I was like 'Hey, there's a baby outside on the sidewalk", said John Baldwin, who recorded video of the baby on the ground after Peterson found her. In a Facebook post Thursday, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said the officers who responded to the 911 call were left "heavyhearted".

Peterson found the newborn baby girl as he was leaving his apartment, which is located in the 17700 block of Red Oak Drive in Houston's northside. She is now being treated at a local hospital but is in a good condition. Initially, the occupants of the apartment at the end of the blood trail reportedly refused to answer the knocks at the door by the deputies.

Investigators concluded that the child was born inside the apartment and then taken outside and dumped in the bushes.

The girl was taken in to the custody of child protection services.

The footage was released on Friday after a man appeared at a custody hearing identifying himself as the father.

The Cypress Creek apartment complex resident heard the sound of a baby crying as he walked by a building.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital, to be checked out.
