The visitors created the better of the first-half openings before Rooney's goal swung the momentum firmly into Everton's favour.

Koeman has already concluded Wayne Rooney's days as a striker are over and he sees the returning Evertonian in a deeper role.

The 31-year-old left Manchester United for boyhood club Everton this summer, and he's taken no time to reward Toffees manager Ronald Koeman for believing in his ability after a disappointing farewell to Old Trafford last season.

"But in hard moments in the game he showed his experience".

Everton earned 43 points at home last season, their highest tally for 27 years.

"We need to find other ways and we need to find productivity from other players". Rooney was instrumental in starting it, playing in Gueye who fed Sandro and he in turn found Calvert-Lewin wide on the right.

We will have all the action and reaction as the two teams go head to head.

"We still have three players out on long-term injuries in Seamus Coleman, Yannick Bolasie and Ramiro Funes Mori, but they are doing well", Koeman told the club's official website.

For me personally, to win a trophy at the club I've grown up supporting would be great.

Veteran midfielder Darren Fletcher soon fizzed a reminder of Stoke's threat past the post although moments of promise were far too fleeting for the visitors.

"When I came here of course it was a different situation", said Koeman.

Mark Hughes's side welcomed Bojan Krkic back following his loan spell in Germany and it was he who drifted a cross-cum-shot over the bar late in the first half as Stoke briefly threatened.

"Maybe that was the reason we didn't play well but I think the second half was much better".

It was October 15 before Stoke collected their first league win last season, September 26 the season before that and September 29 the campaign before that.
