Officials say an NYPD officer who was shot multiple times while responding to a call in Brooklyn is alive thanks to his bullet proof vest.

NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill says Officer Nguyen was shot once in the right arm and twice in his bulletproof vest by the suspect. This is an example of the fact that our officers go into any situation and how it might turn on a moments notice. Police said the officer was being treated at a hospital. The suspect then barricaded himself in the home for hours. When police later stormed he apartment, he was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has been briefed on the shooting, according to a tweet from his office. "Immediately after the shooting, the 29-year-old subject remained in the rear bedroom".

"This vest definitely saved his life", O'Neill said. It began when a woman called 911 telling the dispatcher her son was acting erratically but he was not violent, was not armed and she needed help.

In the moments after the gunfire, the officer could be heard telling emergency dispatchers: "Tell my family I love them". WJCL reported that Smith's neck and arm injuries have almost fully healed, and his physical therapy is nearly complete.

Police sources told the newspaper that the gunman appeared to be carrying a rifle, but the weapon has not been officially identified.

"What could have been just another day, just another call turned into something much worse", the mayor said. Police cars lined several streets in the neighborhood as helicopters circled overhead.

"It's a small-caliber round, so you're not going to be able to see where the impact was, but I did see the blunt force trauma injuries on the officer's chest", O'Neill said, according to New York Daily News.

"He had a great attitude". He tweeted about the standoff from Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.
