Eagles trade WR Jordan Matthews for Bills CB Ronald Darby

The Bills were looking at competing for second place in the AFC East at best before making some big trades on Friday, but after the deals they made, it's hard to imagine them winning more than five or six games this season. That role figures to provide a nice boost to Matthews' fantasy stock, as he was previously expected to serve as Philadelphia's second option behind Alshon Jeffery.

Sammy Watkins and Ronald Darby were both traded away from the Buffalo Bills on Friday.

The 23-year-old Darby totaled 69 stops and 12 passes defensed in 14 games with the Bills in 2016, which was also his second year in the league. In his first two National Football League seasons, Darby started 29 games for the Bills and registered 137 tackles (121 solo), 2 interceptions and 33 passes defensed. Our models have him down for 74 catches, 855 yards and 4.43 touchdowns for the coming season. His 225 receptions rank first in Eagles' history and his 2,673 receiving yards rank third among Eagles' receivers in their first three seasons.

With Matthews gone, Smith should get an opportunity to be Philadelphia's No. 2, though he'll have to compete with Nelson Algohor, among others. Buffalo will now have two picks in each of the first three rounds of the 2018 NFL Draft. In exchange for Watkins and Darby, they did acquire needed position players but also two future draft picks.

Matthew seemed miscast as a WR1 a year ago in Philadelphia, but he was also working with an inconsistent rookie QB. It never gets any easier in this business because however good he is as a player, he's a better person. The Bills can release Taylor before paying him a $6 million roster bonus next March and save most of his $18 million cap number in 2018, the final year of his contract. Patrick Robinson and Jalen Mills sat atop the depth chart prior to the deal, with Ron Brooks as the favorite to man the slot.

"I'd love to have some continuity there".

Before we get into Darby and what he brings to the Eagles, let's talk about what the Eagles are losing in Matthews.
