Red Sox get Reed from Mets for bullpen help

Dave Dombrowski isn't one for beating around the bush.

This season, Reed spent most of the year in the closer's role for Familia, whose season has been shortened by a domestic violence suspension and surgery to fix a blood clot.

The Red Sox bullpen appears to have gotten better this morning.

The Red Sox are sending three 22-year-old right-handers to the mets in exchange for the part-time closer/part-time setup man, one of which could help out as soon as this season.

Addison Reed has had a dominant season so far in 48 appearances Reed is 1-2 with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP in 49.0 IP. Eastern is a critical period as general manager Sandy Alderson attempts to get the Mets back into contention next year after a season of unmet expectations. He had been the Mets' set-up man, but took over the closer role while Jeurys Familia was suspended to start the season and later again after Familia suffered a blood clot in his right arm.

However, Mourinho was quick to laugh off recent reports by saying, "It's easier for Galatasaray to get me than Marouane". The Chelsea boss said: "We know it will be hard next season".

When Reed first was acquired, the Mets had leaned toward non-tendering him at season's end, a concession to his projected jump in salary due to arbitration. Boston already pulled off a deal for Eduardo Nunez to address their need at third base. The Rockies were sent three players as well, headlined by their 21st ranked prospect, infielder Jose Gomez. And the last-place A's are dealing again for prospects as they have historically done. The good news is that in parts of two pro seasons, he's averaged 10.5 strikeouts-per-nine innings.

Boston isn't an airtight club after Monday's deadline maneuverings, and faces a tough task of competing with Sonny Gray and the suddenly retooled New York Yankees.

As one American League talent evaluator put it, the Red Sox "shopped at Saks and got a possible Cy Young guy [Sale], but you have to shop at Target also".

The Red Sox continue to search for another reliever to add ahead of the 2017 trade deadline, which passes on Monday at 4 p.m.

The Red Sox have other needs, including another middle-of-the-order hitter to boost an inconsistent offense that lacks power.
