Meanwhile, Israel's security forces are on high alert following a call by Palestinian Authority (PA) head Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party on Wednesday for a "day of rage" in Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria to protest Israel's presence on the Temple Mount.

Israeli soldiers wounded nine Palestinians and detained four others Wednesday during protests against new Israeli security measures at the Al-Aqsa Mosque that restrict Palestinians on entering.

"In the Old City, evening Muslim prayers took place, many local residents prayed in areas outside the Temple Mount", Israel Police reported Tuesday evening.

According to WAFA, Abbas has made several contacts with world powers to discuss the ongoing Jerusalem tension.

The new measures were initiated after three Arab-Israeli gunmen shot dead two Israeli policemen outside the complex Friday. Jews revere the site as the place of their historic temples, the last of which was ruined by the Romans in 70 AD.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the metal detectors would remain in order to prevent another deadly assault against authorities.

"We renew our call that the historical status quo governing these sites be fully respected, for the sake of peace and reconciliation to the whole community, and we pray for a just and lasting peace in the whole region and all its people", the Jerusalem church leaders said.

The attack comes amid increasing unrest in Jerusalem with the spiritual leader of al-Aqsa Mosque warning on Thursday of an "explosion" over the control of access to the city's holiest site, the Noble Sanctuary.

The measure led a much larger crowd to protest against the police.

Israel reopened the holy site on Sunday, requiring all visitors to go through security checks through metal detectors that were placed at two gates. But apparently Israel now has metal detectors that can intercept Muslim prayers to Allah.

The attack occurred at around 7 a.m., police told the IBC, when the Temple Mount compound was largely empty.

Both the Israelis and the Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital. The three Israeli Arabs from the northern town of Umm al-Fahm who carried out the attack all held identity cards, allowing them the same freedom of movement as anyone else. And Jews flocked to the Temple Mount unhindered for the first time in many years.
